If you’re able, walking is one of the quickest ways to travel short distances on campus.

Active transportation, like walking, dramatically reduces your carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. Even changing one trip from driving or taking transit can improve your carbon footprint and minimize impact on campus shuttles…not to mention getting some fresh air and exercise!

Bypass the roads, cut through campus on one of the scenic walking paths, and discover some of the unique features that make UC Santa Cruz so special!

Watch Where You’re Going

Lots of people use the walking paths and sidewalks, so it’s beneficial to be a conscientious traveler.

Traveling in a group

If traveling in a group, make sure you don’t block the path for those traveling the opposite direction or wanting to pass.

Awareness

Keep headphone volume low enough to hear your surroundings and stay aware of passing cyclists or other pedestrians.

Bike Lanes

Stay out of bike lanes and off the downhill portion of the bike path. The uphill portion has a pedestrian lane that can be used in both directions.

Bus Crossing

Wait for buses to leave their stop before crossing in from of them.

Traffic

Pay attention to traffic and traffic flow; if you can, help ease a traffic backup by letting a car go through.

Check out the UCSC Walking map to find the approximate time to walk between common locations, and find some paths that won’t show up on your maps app!
